Through the vision and determination of a Golden Gate Baptist Seminary student, a Southern Baptist church began in Walnut Creek, CA on September 6, 1953. This student, Rev. Luke Williams, served as pastor of the church while it was being sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Concord.

On January 9, 1955, the church was recognized as an autonomous body with 22 charter members. Later that year, the constitution and bylaws were adopted and the name of the church was changed from First Southern Baptist to Calvary Baptist Church. The church met in the Masonic Temple in Walnut Creek until September of 1956 when a suitable building site was found where it currently resides.
